This year the first day of fall fell on September 22nd.
As The Old Farmer’s Almanac says…
On the autumnal equinox, (the first day of fall), day and night are each about 12 hours long (with the actual time of equal day and night, in the Northern Hemisphere, occurring a few days after the autumnal equinox). The Sun crosses the celestial equator going southward; it rises exactly due east and sets exactly due west.
There is Meteorological fall, but that’s more for scientists and bean counters, it seems.
Either way, I had to get out for a walk. Fall had literally arrived overnight. One day it was 90 degrees, the next day in the 70’s and that night the temps dipped down to 47 out Montgomery way. Pants and a light long sleeve shirt were called for when sucking down the morning coffee out in the yard.
Not much in the way of color was going on in the canopy of leaves, but the ground was starting to get covered. We have had nearly drought conditions out this way, so I wonder if it just being dry is contributing to the falling leaves.
I did run into a bug on a leaf on a no name ditch that seemed to be just out for a drift. A bug canoe I guess.
Frogs and toads were jumping all over the place.
Otherwise it was just a pleasant day to be out for a wander.
Last but not least, what else you gonna do when first in line at a railroad crossing for a long train.
